Native Artist Jaalen Edenshaw

Jaalen Edenshaw is a member of the Tsaal-Eagle clan of the Haida Nation. Jaalen was born in 1980 and raised in the town of Massett on Haida Gwaii. He has always been surrounded by Haida Art. At 13, he started studying Haida art and culture and began learning the intricacies of design. Soon after he started carving cedar masks and spoons. He completed a B.A. in Political Science at the University of Victoria, BC., Canada. Jaalen has apprenticed under Jim Hart, Beau Dick and many other artists. He has received guidance from his father, Haida artist, Guujaaw who is also the President of the Council of the Haida Nation. Jaalen has contributed art work to museums and art shows and has performed as far away as Japan. Jaalen lives and works on Haida Gwaii, with his wife Amanda and young daughter Haana.
