King of the Undersea World Mask

Category: Native American Masks

SOLD This Mask carved in red cedar wood by Rupert Scow from the Kwakwaka'wakw or Kwakiutl Nation depicts the very important King of the Undersea World, also called Komokwa or Copper Maker. The King or Guardian of the Sea lived in a great House under the sea filled with food and treasures and plays an important role in many of the Kwakiutl myths. The green and black colours represent the deep sea and the orange colour represents the copper, a symbol of wealth. The Mask has a Loon on top with moveable wings and a Killer Whale on both sides with articulated tail and fins. Both the loon’s wings and the articulated tail and fins of the Orca’s can be manipulated through a system of strings at the bottom of the mask. The teeth are made out of copper and the mask also features feathers and cedar bark. The mask is about 23 inches long, 27 inches wide and about 8 inches deep. The price includes shipping to the USA and Canada.
