Spirit Bear Mask

SOLD This Spirit Bear or Kermode Bear Mask is carved in Red Cedar by Jonathan Jacobson from the Kwakiutl or Kwakwaka´wakw Nation. The Kermode or Spirit Bear is a black bear that has white fur due to a rare genetic trait. The bear is not albino, as it typically has a brown nose and eyes. According to one Native American story, the Spirit Bear was made white by the creator of the universe to remind its people about the Ice Age and the struggle necessary to survive in those harsh conditions. In many native communities the White Spirit Bear stands for harmony and peace. The mask features rabbit fur representing the white fur of the Spirit Bear. The Mask is 13 inches long, 6 inches wide and 14.5 inches deep.
